Editor's Verdict: Gyminiee offers a largely free, internet community-focused fitness system which also brings you a wealth of health and exercise information and a few quite clever extras. And a clever name. The Gyminee homepage is neat and well designed. Instead of flooding you with information right away as many such websites do it gives you a handy overview of what's on offer and a few easy links to the main places you might want to go. There are basically two clear paths from the homepage, the first taking first time visitors on an informative guided tour of what Gyminee is all about, and the second allowing members to login and immediately access and update their fitness program. The tour is nice and lays everything out clearly, though it could be a bit more flexible – for example it is difficult to go backwards as well as forwards through the pages, making it a rather linear, rigid experience. A set of tabs representing the other pages that make up the tour you can click on to refresh your memory would be nice. At first sight, the amount of information available to you before you sign up (which is admittedly free) seems very limited. In fact, there ARE a few very small links squirreled away at the very bottom of the page you can click on which let you explore a bit more to get a better idea of what Gyminee is all about before you fill out any forms, but they're very well hidden, almost a part of the small print. So if you do visit the Gyminee website be sure to look down here to get a better idea of what you're signing up for. A prominent FAQ would be helpful for first-timers, both in answering your questions and in giving you a feeling of control rather than that you're simply being drip-fed the information they want you to have in the order they you want to have it. For example – it tells you about the Gyminee Pro service but doesn't tell you whether, as the name implies, this costs you money (which it does) or how much. Having said that, the pages are quite nicely proportioned. Unlike a lot of websites they don't scroll down and down forever; information is clearly parceled out on each page and when you're ready you simply click onto the next one. Whilst some fitness websites emphasize selling their downloadable workouts or focus on encouraging you to sign up for an online personal trainer, Gyminee emphasizes the usefulness of a social networking site in helping you to increase accountability for your fitness habits, stay motivated and keep you on track. This includes the facility to communicate with other members and share general advice and positive feedback you will find on many fitness sites as well as some quite clever specific tools. These include the ability to sign up with an online gym buddy (or “accountability partner”) with whom you can share mutual support and encouragement, and specific fitness groups you can join which cater to every conceivable exercise preference. Whatever your goals or interests there should be something that's perfect for you. This communal accountability aspect ties in with what's clever about the name “Gyminee” – in Disney's Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket was appointed to be Pinocchio's conscience, which is essentially the function served by the online community. When your willpower is flagging, and you'd rather eat pies than work on your thighs, this increased accountability helps you to stay on the straight and narrow. Plus, obviously, they changed “Jim” to “Gym” as a clever pun and “y” to “ee” because they don't want to get sued by Disney (everybody knows you don't mess with the mouse). Another benefit of being part of this community is the ability to issue and take part in “everybody wins” challenges with other members – who can lose the most weight, run the furthest or make the biggest improvement on their personal best with weights? Its all friendly competition of course, and can be highly motivating. There's an online leader board for each challenge which is constantly updated so you can see where you rank and who the biggest winners and “losers” (weight losers, of course!) are. Other ways in which Gyminee have made the most of the online medium include the ability to track your exercise activity and access dietary information anywhere using an iPhone. This means you can view exercise demonstration videos on your phone whenever you need them, for example at the gym, and then update your profile with you latest performance information, weight and obesity updates without even having to wait until you get home. Better yet you can access nutritional information on over 60,000 foods before you eat anything no matter where you are, thus really annoying the other people in the restaurant who are waiting to order. If you're ready to crank your fitness frenzy up a notch and really go to war on flab, there's also Gyminee Pro. This is an extra service which allows you access to highly advanced twenty-first century diet and fitness-tracking technology, as well as workouts created by accredited personal trainers, so that you know you are working out smart as well as hard and can see the results clearly spelt out for you. What isn't really explained sufficiently until you get fairly deep inside the rabbit hole is that this is a service you have to pay for (the rest of the website is free). Which is perfectly reasonable in and of itself, after all these are useful and powerful tools and could make a real difference to your progress, except that similar resources are available on other websites for free. A quirk of the internet fitness site market is that there is no common agreement over what should be offered for free and what must be paid for, which means that even more than in other areas its essential to shop around (and always check out No.1 reviews before you buy, of course). Some of these sites also offer greater degrees of customization and personalization and more one-to-one online coaching. Finally, it should be added that Gyminee.com is still a fairly young site in a fairly young market and exactly what you have to pay for and what you can get for free may change as the market finds its equilibrium – it may even have done so by the time you read this review. At the end of the day you could do a lot worse than plump for Gyminee as your fitness website of choice – there is a wealth of useful information and support here, most of it for free – but don't be afraid to shop around to make sure you find the site that's best for you. Pricing aside, each site is slightly different in the sorts of tools and motivational boosts they offer, and at the end of the day what best motivates you to get fit will be slightly different to what motivates anyone else. Clever name, though. Click on the button below, to visit Gyminee.com...
