Editor's Verdict: NextFitness.com offers its own unique slant on the burgeoning online fitness market in that their customized exercise programs are audio-based – everything goes on your MP3 player so you can take the perfect personalized workout with you wherever you go. The Next Fitness website not only looks great but is well designed, cleverly organised and is easy to find your way around. Unusually, you even get a little intro video that explains how everything works in a useful amount of detail. Unlike a lot of fitness websites you are also able to learn about the trainers themselves and check out their credentials, which is helpful. Next Fitness, is the website formerly known as Pod Fitness. Rebranding is a wonderful thing - presumably the organisers decided that pod people from outer space were no longer their key demographic. Actually the “pod” part was quite informative (a key objective of rebranding being to make things sound cooler whilst erasing any clues to what they actually are), because site combines personal training with your favourite music, all mixed together and downloaded to your iPod (other MP3 players can also be used), to provide the ultimate motivational workout. Which is clever. Actually that's only half of the clever. The workout sessions Next Fitness mix in with your music are specially scripted and recorded by nationally renowned fitness trainers from every aspect of sports, exercise and weight-training. Put simply, the guy who's shouting at Brad Pitt to push through his pain envelope and max out his abdominals will soon be shouting at you to push through your pain envelope and max out your abdominals. Not only does this make ingenious use of a technology we all take for granted to help you get fit, better yet it means you now have your own personalized training montage, just like in the Rocky films and every sporting underdog movie made since. Of course, Next Fitness didn't invent the idea of working out to music, and there's nothing to stop you listening to motivational music on your MP3 player whilst you workout without signing up, but then you wouldn't get the expert workouts mixed in with your phat beats. As distinct from other top fitness websites that allocate you one personal trainer who supervises your whole program, usually via email, NextFitness gives you the flexibility of being able to choose, for example, a weight training programme with one trainer and supplement it with athletics training from a specialised running coach and yoga sessions recorded by a top yoga teacher. This allows endless experimentation and customization; the choice of what you want to learn and who you want to learn it from is literally yours. The trade-off with this is, of course, the lack of a personal connection you might get with a single, live online personal trainer who overseas your progress and is available to consult 24/7. Having said that you can access fitness advice at any time, day or night, via the Next Fitness website. This ethos of customising your workouts, and trainers, to your preferences is there from the very start. You begin by filling in a questionnaire telling Next Fitness not just about your current fitness status and what you would like to achieve in the future, but also how you prefer to exercise, what equipment you already own and what your general lifestyle is like. These details will enable Next Fitness to recommend a choice of the trainers best suited to providing the optimal schedule of personalized workouts to get you from where you are now to where you want to be. Once you've chosen your trainer and workout schedule all you have to do is upload your favourite music from the hit parade to iTunes or Zune and Next's cyber-DJ's will do the rest, mixing in your playlist of tunes with the world's largest audio exercise workout library. The software which creates your workouts for you are designed to emulate the same decision-making processes a personal trainer would use if they were working with you in person. Better yet, they adapt to your changing needs as you make progress and need to be challenged a bit more or focus on specific areas. Should you decide to sign up you with Next Fitness, you will begin with a free 10-day trial membership, after which you can either decide to cancel or do nothing and be carried through into full membership status. This can be paid for by any major credit card or using Paypal and is charged on a quarterly basis. Membership is continuous and renews itself automatically. A big plus is that you can cancel any time without any hassle, either online or by phone, without having to pay a cancelation fee, and keep all the workouts you've already downloaded to use again as often as you like. It has to be said that you do pay more here than for some other online fitness programs, but if the unique audio-based system offered by Next Fitness appeals to you then this still may be the right choice. Be aware, though, there are cheaper options out there, each of them offering a different slant on getting fit, and it's well worth exploring what the other websites in our Top 10 list have to offer before deciding which will work best for you. Another possible drawback: if weight loss as opposed to general fitness training is your specific goal is that unlike other fitness website, Next tend not to emphasise the dietary side of things – they give you a customized workout and fitness plan but not a personalized dietary regime to go with it as some do. But this is more a matter of choosing the right fitness website to suit your requirements than a global criticism of Next Fitness. If music is what best motivates you and you like the idea of sharing your (albeit pre-recorded) personal trainers with stars from the worlds of sports and entertainment, signing up with Next may well be worth considering. After all, with Next Fitness you get not just a great personal trainer but also a great DJ – but please show some imagination and don't just choose “Eye of the Tiger” for every workout.
