Editor's Review:

Fitocracy offers a two-tier system to help you get fitter. It supplies interactive online tools to help monitor your progress, plus a variety of coached plans to make sure you’re heading in the right direction. Its online resources are free, and whilst it costs money to hire a coach, prices are affordable and offer very good value for money.

Basic membership is free. This allows you to get free workouts, whether you’re a complete amateur or have been working out for years. To keep you motivated, you can earn badges and track your progress. Progress tracking is a little more sophisticated here than we’ve seen on some sites, as you can check your stats on interactive graphs, which leaves little doubt about the areas you’re succeeding in, and those you need to work on.

There’s a positive community to engage with on Fitocracy.com, which may help to keep you focused and motivated. You can also read daily articles, including tips, in the site’s knowledge center.

If you feel that you might need the support of a professional coach, this is where the site really comes into its own. You can choose from a wide range of workout programs, each priced differently and each targeted at a different aspect of fitness. They range from weight loss to bulking up, toning your stomach to increasing your cardio endurance.

You could also choose your program based on the coaches you prefer to work with. Coaches are hired to provide as much advice as you need. They can help to set your goals, making sure they’re stretching you but also realistic. This is a great motivator, and makes sure you’re not feeling low. Coaches can also help you to design diet plans which will suit your particular workout schedule. If you’re looking to lose weight, for example, you’ll probably want low fat diets. Whereas, if you’re hoping to build muscle, high protein foods may be important.

It’s nice to have a professional on call when you need them, and since most plans cost around $10 to $20 per week, you’re getting a lot of support for your money. If you had a private mentor in a gym this would cost you a lot more.

The site doesn’t have a shop to buy books, DVDs, supplements or equipment. That’s not really a problem as you can do it elsewhere, but it would have been handy to be able to buy equipment that you’d need for the various exercises through the website. Free tools are also a bit limited, but it’s worth joining up to see what’s on offer and whether you think the free workouts will benefit you. From there, you can make a decision about whether or not you’d like to pay a coach for their services.

Whilst Fitocracy doesn’t offer huge amounts to its free members, if you feel that you’d benefit from a professionally-designed exercise course with the support of a real coach, it’s bound to have plenty for you. Prices are very competitive, and the personal service sets it apart from many of its competitors.
