Editor's Verdict:

Just looking at Gym America's high-powered homepage, emblazoned with images of heaving muscles, sweaty, toned flesh and red white and blue text may well be enough to make the flabby and un-American amongst us feel slightly intimidated. Make no mistake, this is a no-nonsense fitness website that aims to get results - fast. It does so by taking the very latest computer technology and medical know-how and applying them to your specific fitness needs and goals.

The site itself is slick, professional and glossy, if a little butch. It lays out the basic package for you right up front so you don't need to click through page after page for hours after hour just to get a good idea of they offer. Gym America's website is all meat and no bull. This "just the facts" approach is ideal if you're a busy go-getter, always on the move, and you don't have a lot of time to browse the internet comparing fitness websites - you want the basic information encapsulated for you in an easy to assimilate format and that's what you get.

The downside of this design philosophy is that the site as a whole is fairly small and slightly limited in terms of the depth of information available before you sign up. Details and examples of what you actually get are somewhat lacking. In fact, most of the tabs on the homepage just link back to the homepage itself. There is only a short FAQ and those who have further questions may only contact GymAmerica via an email address which is manned Monday to Friday. What information it does offer is smartly presented and might well impress the star-spangled socks off you if you haven't shopped around a bit and don't know there are other sites that offer you more for less (and give you a better idea of what your signing up for before you sign up for it).

If you do decide to sign up, a significant plus is the free 10-day trial (at the end of which you have to explicitly cancel your membership or you're automatically carried through to full - paying - member status). Signing up is simple enough and you can pay using most major credit cards. Your membership is automatically renewed at the end of each term but can be canceled at any time.

In the past Gym America has been seen as more of a weight-training site than a comprehensive diet and fitness resource, and whilst this testosterized approach is still evident in the feel and tone of the site it has to be said that Gym America now encompasses a much broader health philosophy. These days it offers a great deal more than just the chance to beef up your biceps and max out your quads.

Where GymAmerica excels is in its scientific know-how and extensive armoury of proven exercise and dieting techniques. This website wants you to exercise smart as well as hard, avoiding the mistakes that would otherwise mean wasting hours of your time sweating away on the wrong exercises to little effect. Gym America aims to help you find your optimal personalized route to fast and long-lasting fitness benefits. The workout and diet plans they provide are fully tailored to your current fitness levels and future goals and are clearly illustrated and explained with full instructions. Each exercise even has its own computer animation to show you how to do it right. The targets they set you are realistically achievable, given a little commitment on your part, and when you do achieve them you can log your progress on your "My Locker" page on their website, which is perfect for helping you keep track of your past achievements and focus on your future goals. It can be very rewarding to be able to log the results of your latest workout onto your profile and immediately see how far you've come when your graphs and stats automatically update themselves.

The main downside of this service is that, unlike our very favorite fitness websites, Gym America does not offer you your own specific online personal trainer with whom you can form a strong and rewarding motivational relationship and who will be accessible 24/7 via email, familiar with your goals and aims and always ready to help you go the extra mile. This is something customers of our highest-rated fitness websites have repeatedly cited as their favorite aspect of the service they enjoy. Gym America's virtual personal trainer, on the other hand, is just that - a highly sophisticated computer program, not a human being.

Of course, you can email the website with questions and draw on their expertise whenever you need it, but that feeling of having someone other than yourself to be accountable to and being able to rely on their strength to motivate you even when your own strength is flagging, isn't there. Admittedly, access to an online community of other fitness fans who can provide encouragement is a big plus (albeit one that costs the company almost nothing), but such communities are available on our other top-rated websites too, and some of those do offer a specific personal trainer. For the strong-willed amongst us, this may not be a huge drawback, but for many long-term slimmer's this one-on-one support is a key factor in helping them muster the motivation to finally get themselves into shape.

This lack of a personal connection is symptomatic of a related, less tangible, criticism of the Gym America system. Whilst the whole thing does feel very slick and professional it also feels rather impersonal. The best fitness websites excel by making you feel like you are getting personal attention - that you are your personal trainer's only client and your progress their sole concern. Even though you know this is not actually the case the impression can still be very motivating and take a lot of the loneliness out of dieting and exercising on your own. The Gym America system, whilst highly customized to customer's individual needs, still feels like an automated system designed to process the maximum quantity of customers with the minimal amount of extra effort - and even if it is exactly that (it has every right to be) it shouldn't feel like it is.

Admittedly this is a matter of personal preference and something that is unlikely to bother most clients as long as the system gets results. And, overwhelmingly, feedback seems to suggest that it does. There are few complaints around about the service offered by GymAmerica.com - without a doubt they have the technology, they have the know-how and they get the job done.

The prices they offer are reasonable and there are a range of packages to choose from, though you can get even better value by looking further up our top 10 list particularly if you value the personal touch, and Gym America can boast a lot of satisfied customers. Chances are that if you like what you see on their website, and decide to take the plunge and sign up, soon you too will be among them.
